SPRING TERM NEWSLETTER

16th January 2012

Dear Parent(s),

Happy New Year and welcome to the children and families who have joined us this term. I know school will develop a successful working relationship for the benefit of our children.

Attached is a list of dates this term.  Please keep it safe.  Further details will follow prior to each event.

Please could I remind you that school starts promptly at 8.50 a.m., the children being allowed in from 8.45 a.m..  A prompt start to the school day enables the children to start their learning day smartly.

Please could I remind you that we have asked all the children to cross the road at the zebra crossing.  Some children are a little confused thinking the speed hump outside school is a type of crossing. Please could you ensure that they understand this is not the case. Also please could you take your children to the zebra crossing to cross the road.  Staff are coming into school speaking of ‘near misses' on the road. What a disaster it would be if a child were to be hit by a car.

Contact Details - Please could I ask you to let the School Office know should you change your mobile phone number or your emergency contact details change.  Thank you.

Pupil Absence- If your child is unwell and not coming to school please could you telephone the Office each day before 9.30 a.m..  In order to ensure the safety of our pupils if we have not heard from parents of a child who is absent we will phone you.  You may leave a message on the answerphone prior to 8.30 a.m. from which time there will be someone in the School Office.  Thank you.

Family Support Partner - Jo Dawson is our Family Support Partner who works for us offering support and guidance to parents and children in school.  She comes into school each Monday and is available to the children during lunchtime.  Jo can be contacted on 07825 621365.  Please do contact her even for small worries she may be able to help or point you in the direction of someone who could.

Money into School - Please could I ask that money sent into school for any reason be sent in an envelope labeled with your child's name and the event it is for.  This would help Office staff enormously.  Thank you.

Assemblies - You are very welcome to join us for assemblies on Fridays at 8.55 a.m.. You are also more than welcome on a Tuesday when Rev'd Lisa Cornwell leads our assemblies. The programme for Friday assemblies is listed below :

Annual reports - Each year you receive your child's annual report in the Summer term.  You will however receive a target sheet this term.  This sheet will summarise your child's levels of achievement and the targets set will be the focus for discussion at the Parents evenings in March.

Parents Evenings - These will be held on 6th and 8th March 2012. These will be formal appointments lasting ten minutes each.  You will be given the opportunity to book an appointment nearer the time.  Please remember if you have any concerns/issues you wish to raise you are welcome to make arrangements to speak with a teacher at the end of the school day.

Charity of the Year 2012 - The School Council have voted to support the Dogs Trust this year.  So far we have raised £221.44 from collections at our very successful Key Stage 1 Christmas production and a donation.  Thank you very much for your generosity.  Before half term we are holding a sponsored event to raise money for the Dogs Trust and we will be holding a Business Enterprise Week in the Summer term.

Judo Coaching - Judo  Club which is held on Wednesday lunchtimes 12.20 - 1.00 p.m. has some spaces at present for children from Year 1 upwards.  If your child is interested in having a trial please could you inform the School Office.  Fees for the term are £54.50 which includes kit hire.  Thank you.

www.buy.at/crowthornecofeschool - Please remember to use this website.  It is easy to use and there is no cost attached.  Use this site to access your favourite online stores and companies (there are lots of them to choose from!) and then shop as you would do normally.  A percentage of what you spend is then diverted to our school.  Thank you.

School Kitchen - recently our school kitchen underwent a thorough inspection of both the facilities and staff.  We were very pleased to hear that our school kitchen received the best scores for cleanliness and overall efficiency in the Borough.  They scored 97.4% which is excellent.

Parent Questionnaire - In the next few days we will be sending home a questionnaire.  We would be grateful if you could complete this and return it to school.  We are interested in your views and the information you give us will be used to make learning an even more positive experience for your child(ren).  Thank you.

Please could I ask that you could leave the school grounds promptly at the end of the school day in order for Jitterbugs to be able to use the grounds.

Please could I ask that you ensure all school uniform is clearly named as the children become anxious when they lose items of clothing or they become muddled with another child's.

Should you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to come and see me.  I look forward to a hard working term with your continued support.

Yours sincerely

B. L. Gellatly (Mrs)

Headteacher

The sun shone as Crowthorne C of E joined in with the Royal Wedding celebrations by having our very own  Street Party. The playground was decorated with bunting and the children designed and made crowns or hats and wore them proudly as they sang traditional British songs and enjoyed a special treat of cake and biscuits washed down by a drink of squash.

The following photos show the children enjoying the street party!

In March 2007 Crowthorne C of E were validated for, and achieved the National Healthy School Status.  This is a national programme that has been rolled out country-wide by the DfES and Department of Health, following on from the Berkshire Healthy Schools programme where we achieved the Bronze award in 2005 and Silver award in 2006.  The programme reflects the Government's commitment to achieve a healthy population of young people focusing on four core themes.  To achieve the award schools have to meet the criteria for all four areas.  Schools are asked to demonstrate evidence in the core themes using a whole-school approach involving the whole school community:

*          personal, social and health education including sex and relationship education & drug education (including alcohol, tobacco and volatile substance abuse); usually achieved through PSHE lessons which are part of the National Curriculum and only taught at the appropriate level of the children.

*          healthy eating; achieved through Science lessons in the National Curriculum; a healthy eating snack policy for break times and encouraging children eating packed lunches to have a healthy balance of the different food groups; through BFBC catering company that is Healthy Schools approved for children eating hot lunches and ensuring regular discussions between Cook and the Headteacher on menus being offered; through consultation with parents.

*          physical activity; achieved through the National Curriculum Physical Education requirements; by offering a variety of before school, lunchtime and after-school sports clubs; through organised playground activities at break and lunchtimes using the new playground games; getting the day started after assembly with 'Kick-Start' on a rota basis for year groups; and with 'Huff & Puff' organised games by Years 5 & 6 for the younger year groups.

*          emotional health and well-being; achieved through the 'whole-school approach' in the National Curriculum and school policies such as 'Bullying' and Behaviour; through behaviour expectations set as part of school and classroom life and having a positive attitude to learning, including taking a pride in appearance and wearing correct uniform; through School Council representing each class.

A 'Healthy School' promotes the health and well-being of its pupils and staff through a well-planned, taught curriculum in a physical and emotional environment that promotes learning and healthy lifestyle choices.  This fits in with Ofsted's expectation that all schools should demonstrate how they are contributing to the five national outcomes for children stipulated by Every Child Matters and the Children Act 2004 - being healthy; staying safe; enjoying and achieving; making a positive contribution; and economic well-being.

Now that we have received the award the school will be visited annually to make sure the good practices in place are being maintained, and re-validated every three years.  The Healthy Schools Task Group, made up of the Headteacher, staff, a school governor and parents, meet each term and report back to the Governing Body and parents by means of newsletters.  If you would like more information or would like to get involved with the Task Group please contact the School Office.
