“To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.” – Chinese Proverb
Intent
At Crowthorne C of E Primary school we use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages (French) curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. The ultimate aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2.
Our key aims are:
Implementation
All Key Stage 2 classes will have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons in Key Stage 2.
The four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing are taught and all necessary grammar is covered in an age-appropriate way. Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.
We ensure that the foreign language knowledge of our pupils progresses within each academic year and is extended year upon year throughout Key Stage 2 and, in so doing, will always be relevant and in line with meeting or exceeding national DfE requirements.
Each unit delivers:
Languages Day
Each year we celebrate different languages from around the world. This gives our children the opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions in other countries and acquire some new language skills! We welcome parents and native speakers of other languages into school to spend time with the children. It is often a highlight of the school year.
Transition to secondary school
We are aware that many of our children will be given the opportunity to learn Spanish when they move into Year 7. As such, we have developed our links with the languages department at Edgbarrow School. In Year 5 and 6 our children enjoy Spanish sessions with staff from Edgbarrow in order to smooth and aid transition into secondary language learning.
Not a 'Modern' foreign language!
As part of our link work with Wellington Prep School (Formerly Eagle House School) our Year 5 children have the opportunity to learn Latin! Whilst definitely not a modern language, our children love learning new vocabulary and learning about the etymology of many words that we use today.
Impact
Teachers assess children through structured end of unit assessments through the Language Angels scheme. The key areas of: reading, listening, writing and grammar are assessed. Language learning and teaching is monitored through lesson drop-ins and pupil voice.
At Crowthorne C of E, we want the impact of our French (MfL) curriculum to be that:
Our children become more confident and ambitious with the foreign language they are learning.
