Year 3
Welcome to Year 3!
Class Teachers:

Mr Cranstone and Mrs Hawley
Teaching Assistant:

Miss Hall
Mr Cranstone teaches Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Hawley teaches on Thursdays and Fridays.
Key Information
- PE Lessons (Please note, these have changed): Mondays and Tuesdays.
Our PE days have changed this half-term as a tennis coach will be visiting us on Monday afternoons to lead us through a series of sessions - how exciting!
Please make sure that your child comes in with the appropriate kit at the start of each half term and that each item is clearly labelled. PE kits will be sent home at the end of every half term for washing unless specified otherwise.
- Reading Records - Checked (and changed, if required) every Monday morning.
Children need to be reading every day (minimum of 3 times a week) for 20 minutes, with one entry signed off by an adult. We suggest this be the last entry before records are checked in school. If your child finishes their book, please ensure this is clearly written in the record so that Miss Hall knows it needs changing.
If you would like to support with the development of your child's comprehension, please ask them questions about what they have read and discuss their answers with them - what did they learn/find out; how did they reach an answer; what led them to their conclusion?
- Spelling - Our new approach.
Each week will have a different spelling focus; for example, adding the -s suffix to root/base words ending with a y, or the /ow/ sound spelt 'ou'.
Each week, on a Monday, the children will be taught the week's focus rule. They will then complete an independent task on a Tuesday and have a revision session on a Wednesday. On Wednesdays, we will mark the previous week's homework and your child will be sent home with the homework sheet for the current week. Please help your child to complete this task (it does not all have to be done at the same time, you could do a section a day) and feel free to leave any sections which feel too challenging. We will be marking these together so can address this then.
For ease, we suggest homework return to school with children's reading records on a Monday. However, it is not required until Wednesday.
Please retain all marked homework sheets and revisit them regularly, to ensure your child's understanding of the taught spelling rules is regularly refreshed. If your child's sheet has highlighted words on it, these are the words we have chosen for them to focus on that week.
- Times-Tables - Please practice regularly.
At the end of Year 4, the children will complete the statutory assessment of their tables knowledge. By the end of Year 3, children are expected to be fluent with the following tables: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10.
We hope the children will also have started, or be confident with, the 6's and 9's by the time they move into Year 4.
Summer Term
This term, we’re getting stuck into designing and making our very own healthy pizzas in Design Technology — and yes, there may be a little flour on our sleeves along the way! We’ll be putting our chef hats on to prepare the dough before transforming it into delicious pizzas. This hands-on experience will then help us in English, where we’ll be writing clear instructions on how to make the perfect pizza (future Great British Bake Off contestants in the making, perhaps?).
In History, we’ll be buckling up our sandals and stepping back in time to explore life as a Roman. We’ll discover what everyday life was like and how the Roman invasion of Britain impacted people’s lives. In Art, we’ll be getting creative by exploring Roman mosaics and designing our own mosaic patterns.
Later in the term, we’ll dive into the legend of King Arthur. We’ll bring the stories to life by creating comic strips and even writing and filming our own news reports.
There’s lots to look forward to, including swimming, Sports Day, our class assembly, and an exciting class trip — it’s going to be a busy and fun-filled term!

Class Assembly
Here is a digital copy of our piece of performance poetry and a link to the song. Make sure you practise them as often as possible!
When rehearsing the song, don't forget to change the playback speed to 1.15x, to speed it up a little.
