Personal Development and Wider Opportunities

Education is a once in a lifetime opportunity to open children's hearts and minds to the

unbelievable wonder of the universe. Sir Anthony Seldon

At Crowthorne C of E Primary School we believe in the importance of developing each child personally, socially, morally and spiritually as well as academically. We recognise our responsibility to ensure that children have opportunities to pursue creative and sporting interests and to be enthused by their learning in all subject areas.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to broaden children's experiences and understanding of the world around them, celebrating the diversity of both our school and local area as well as the world. We enhance our curriculum through trips, visitors, workshops and theme days as well as providing a range of additional opportunities such as extra-curricular clubs and specialist teaching that goes beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum.

This page is designed to give you a taste of the breadth and scope of our personal development offer and the opportunities our children experience.

Sporting Opportunities

As well as our high quality PE curriculum, children also have the opportunity to take part in local sporting events such as football and tag-rugby matches, a cross country tournament, athletics events and cricket competitions. We also take advantage of specialist coaching and workshops to further enhance our sporting tuition in school such as yoga lessons, cricket coaching and an archery taster day. Our extra-curricular club offer also includes a number of sports clubs such as gymnastics, dance, football and athletics.

Creative Opportunities

We have a thriving school choir open to children in KS2 who perform in a number of concerts during the year. Children in Year 4 all learn a musical instrument as part of their music lessons and there is the opportunity for children to opt to have individual or small group lessons in a range of instruments (currently piano and woodwind) and/or to join a Rocksteady band.

Earlier in the year, we hosted a drama club for KS1 children (run by Wellington College), children have the opportunity to develop their artistic skills in school and we promote local events and competitions that link with the creative arts. EYFS and KS1 enjoyed a visit from an author and illustrator earlier in the year and a number of year groups have been able to use the specialist facilities for art/DT lessons at Wellington College Prep School.

Theme Days, Trips and Visitors

All year groups enjoy the enhancements to their learning that theme days provide, with themes including The Victorians (Yr6), The Egyptians (Yr5), Fairytales (YrR), Great Fire of London (Yr2). We also occasionally have whole weeks with a particular theme such as Science Week or Children's Mental Health Week. Across each academic year, there is a wide range of trips out of school arranged, some within the local area and some further afield, and children in Years 5 and 6 attend a residential trip. Visitors are also invited into school regularly to support the children's learning such as authors, members of religious communities and specific professions linked to learning.

Leadership Opportunities and Helping Others

We encourage the children to take on leadership roles in school, especially as they get older. Year 6, in particular, take on a number of roles such as Prefects and House Captains while children across the school have the opportunity to join School Council or to be on our Eco-Team. We also have Reading Ambassadors who promote reading within the school. Children have been involved in key decisions made within the life of the school and are proud of the fact that they have a voice. As a school, we also support charity events/days and seek to also make a positive contribution to our local community.
