What will we be learning this half term?

The second half of the spring term is all about animals! We begin by thinking about our pets and how to look after them. Then we’ll learn about the animals that can be found in different habitats around the world such as deserts and rainforests and we’ll find out how camouflage is important to some animals in these environments too. We’ll spend some time finding out about farm animals and the role of farms in food production. And finally, we’ll look at some very small animals as we learn about the life cycle of a frog and find out about some of the minibeast that live on our school site. There are no new sounds to learn in Phonics so this half term will focus on consolidation alongside learning to blend longer words and words with more than one digraph. In writing, the children will become increasingly independent as they use the sounds that they know to write simple sentences with finger spaces. In maths, the children will continue to secure a deep understanding of the composition of numbers from 5 to 7, they will explore doubles and odd/even numbers as well as beginning to recognise coins, and them together to make small amounts. There will be spring festivals to explore too – first of all the Hindu celebration of “Holi” and then the Easter story from the Bible. The term will end with our Whole School Easter Bonnet Parade – a much-loved highlight of the school calendar.
